What are the health benefits of sparkling water?

Hydration* is key to any healthy lifestyle. And drinking plenty of water is a great way to ensure that you’re keeping your fluid levels topped up.

Sometimes though, drinking enough water throughout the day isn’t quite as easy as it sounds, and sparkling water can be a great alternative to help you hydrate* with a little extra sparkle.

What is sparkling water?

Sparkling water is made by infusing still water with carbon dioxide under pressure. The result is those unmistakable bubbles adding a little extra sparkle to the water you drink (1).

At evian, our water is pure and natural**, straight from the Alps. And now, we’ve added a little extra sparkle to our range.

But is sparkling water good for you? What are the health benefits? Does it hydrate* you? Let’s explore the sparkling water benefits that could contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

Is sparkling water good for you?
As a society, we’re more health-conscious than ever before. You might be wondering if what you’re putting into your body is benefiting your health. So, just what are the health benefits of sparkling water?

1.    Stay hydrated

On average, over half of a healthy body is made up of water. Dehydration occurs when you lose more fluid than you take in, affecting the healthy balance of minerals in your body (3). That’s why it’s vital to drink enough fluid on a daily basis. If you find it challenging to get enough water throughout the day, sparkling water can be a great way to stay well hydrated* with a little added sparkle.

2.    Maintaining your temperature

As well as keeping you hydrated*, water plays a vital role when it comes to maintaining a healthy body temperature***. If you play sports or sweat more than usual, perhaps due to hot weather or a fever, drinking enough water is very important. That way, you’ll be replacing any fluids that you lose and avoid dehydration (4)

Does sparkling water hydrate you?

It’s recommended that the average adult drinks between 6 and 8 cups of liquid every day (5).  And drinking sparkling water is a pure and simple way of staying hydrated*.

Research so far suggests that pure** sparkling water is absorbed just as well as still water (6).  So when it comes to the question of still or sparkling? The choice is yours.

*water contributes to the maintenance of normal physical and cognitive functions (at least 2.0L of water, from all sources, should be consumed per day).
**Pure as all natural mineral waters
***water contributes to the maintenance of normal regulation of the body's temperature
