REDUCING ITS CARBON FOOTPRINT

TAKING ACTION THROUGHOUT THE PRODUCT'S LIFECYCLE
evian's approach consists of taking action throughout the lifecycle of its products, from protecting the resource itself, to promoting sorting for recycling purposes, and all the actions needed to effectively reduce its environmental impact at each step of the way.
evian, conscious of its impact, works actively in a spirit of continuous improvement to reduce its emissions of greenhouse. Having achieved a reduction of 40% from 2008 to 2014, evian's teams continue to measure, control and work throughout the full life cycle of the bottles: including design, production, transport and recycling.

PACKAGING
Packaging represents 51% of evian’s overall carbon footprint. An international research and development center for all the waters of Danone, whose mission is to improve product packaging, is located next to evian's bottling plant. This centre focuses on the materials employed, for example on the increased percentage of recycled plastics used in our bottles, or the sourcing and use of plant-based plastics. In 2008 evian was the first brand in France to incorporate recycled plastic (known as rPET) in its plastic bottles.
evian aims to use, on average, 25% of recycled plastics in its bottles by 2020.
Another objective is, in collaboration with several other companies, to develop a bottle made of 100% plant-based plastic.

AT THE PLANT
At the bottling plant itself we focus on reducing the consumption ogf water,  energy and our emissions of greenhouse gases, this throughout the production process. This stage of the product's lifecycle represents 7% of evian's carbon footprint.
Our plant, which is certified ISO 50 001 (energy management norm), managed to reduce its energy consumption by 24.5% between 2008 and 2015.
Another major challenge for evian is to manage waste water (effluents) originating from its plant.
Concerning waste water management, evian has become a reference in the field of effluent water treatment following the opening of its vegetable and mineral water treatment station in 2014. This station represents a true agro-industrial innovation in the field of mineral treatment of phosphorous. This form of treatment respects the stringent regulatory norms surrounding the natural water reserve into which the purified water is returned. This project was supported both technically and financially by the Agence de l'Eau (French Water Agency).

TRANSPORT
The plant is also equipped with a railway station, allowing 60% of its products to be shipped by train. Transport represents 42% of evian's total carbon footprint. A large portion of bottle shipments from the plant are done by train. This method of transport has a carbon footprint 80 times lower than road transport.
Following a policy of continuous improvement, the focus over the coming years will be to develop a multi-mode transport solutions (combining several modes of transport) so as to further increase the use of train freight.
